Tips for Surviving the (Awesome) Craziness of Marrakech, Morocco

Marrakech.  The city whose name I was never sure if it was spelled with a ‘C’ or ‘S’ (turns out, C=English spelling, S=French spelling).  The city that is dusty, crowded, invasive, hectic, overwhelming, uncomfortable, confusing. AND FILLED WITH SO MUCH AWESOME. Initial Fears Initially, I’ll admit, I was scared about going to Morocco.  I remember sitting in my hostel in Sevilla, Spain, conducting HOURS of research, trying to figure out Continue reading Tips for Surviving the (Awesome) Craziness of Marrakech, Morocco

The Downsides of Long Term Travel

Over the past year, I’ve had the opportunity to do some incredible things during my dabble in long term travel.  From trekking to Mt. Everest Base Camp, to SCUBA diving between tectonic plates in Iceland, to hiking the Great Wall of China and becoming a beach bum on the island of Koh Lanta in Thailand. I wouldn’t trade a single second of anything I’ve done in the past 13 months. Continue reading The Downsides of Long Term Travel

My Worst Hostel Experience (so far)

I have to say, I’ve had pretty decent luck with hostels so far.  They aren’t the usual dingy hole-in-the-walls that they used to be, with a reputation for uncleanliness and lack of safety.  These days many hostels are making their way towards ’boutique hostels’, which are actually more like hotels. I’ve had hostels with free breakfast, privacy curtains, individual plugs and lamps for each bed, your own locker for your Continue reading My Worst Hostel Experience (so far)

Sad news and changes to my travel plans

On Sunday, after getting back to my hostel from a walking tour around Manila, I got the sad news that my grandmother had passed away suddenly. Anyone who has ever been away from home when something like this happens knows that it’s a tough and lonely place to be, and my ‘to-do’ list for the day went from “What am I going to have for dinner?” to “Do I stay Continue reading Sad news and changes to my travel plans

I reached my goal – over $20,000 saved for travel!

Back at the beginning of the year when I first started blogging and recording my budgets, I had said I wanted to save $20,000 before I left for my trip. And guess what my friends…I did it!! I have $20,448.45 in my ‘Travel the World’ fund and $3,000 in an ‘Emergency/Return Home’ fund. Which brings us to a grand total of $23,448.45!  Not too shabby in a year and a Continue reading I reached my goal – over $20,000 saved for travel!

Look Up (At the World Around You)

Ironically enough a friend of Facebook shared this the other day and I think it’s brilliant. I don’t want to ruin it, so just watch.  Trust me. Makes you think doesn’t it? How much of our time do we spend looking down instead of up?  Too much.  I’m completely guilty of this as well.  I have tried over the past few months to put my phone down more but it’s Continue reading Look Up (At the World Around You)

The Double Life

I wanted to share this poem with all of you.  It’s hands down my favorite and pretty much describes my life right now in a nutshell.  It also is really relevant to the struggle I went through when deciding to quit my job to travel. I liked my job, I liked having a circle of friends and favorite restaurants to frequent.  I enjoyed owning books and movies all crammed into Continue reading The Double Life
