The cost of travel - April 2015 budget roundup

OUCH.

That’s really the only way to describe the month of April’s travel budget.

Fun and incredible adventures? Priceless.

In reality? Not at all priceless. In fact quite a hefty price tag. Taking a look at the final cost of my travels had me being like:

But was it worth it? Absolutely.

Would I spend all that money again in a heartbeat? Hell yes.

There were so many incredible things I wanted to do while I was in Europe. I knew they came with some serious dollar signs behind them, but I honestly didn’t care (though I’m sure my travel budget sure did). These adventures are the reason I spent almost 3 years saving up all that money.

I’ll get back to my budget traveling soon enough. But the month of April was all about the memories.

BRUSSELS

I only spent 2 days in the lovely city of Belgium. But in that time I went on a free 3 hour walking tour (though if it’s a good tour always make sure to tip at the end!), ate Belgian waffles and Belgian fries to my heart’s content, and sipped on some delicious Belgian beer. The only place my travel budget really took a hit here was in yummy goodies #worth it.

TOTAL - $103.68

AVERAGE - $51.84/day

AMSTERDAM

I spent 5 lovely days in the city of Amsterdam. Unfortunately it was over the Easter holiday weekend, so prices were jacked up pretty high. However I still took a cruise down the canals, visited the Anne Frank museum and the infamous tulip gardens, and ate as many Stroopwafels as I could get my hands on. My travel budget was still looking alright after my time here.

TOTAL - $387.93

AVERAGE - $77.59/day

IRELAND

A road trip by yourself is never a cheap endeavor. But this was Ireland here people! So I rented a car for 11 days, drove myself basically around the coast of the entire country, got to stop off wherever I wanted (which was about every 500 feet), visit the places that interested me, and, most importantly, I got to have my own space to rock out to the radio. Here’s the point in my trip where my travel budget really started to hate me.

TOTAL - $1154.30

AVG - $88.79/day

Actually not that bad when you consider that price includes a car, accommodation, food, and sightseeing for a total of 13 days.

LONDON

In my fourth time in London on this European adventure, I got to hang out with my sister! We geeked out for the weekend and attended a Sherlock convention, found ourselves in the midst of the London Marathon, and ate delicious things at the Borough Market. As you can see, the daily travel budget keeps on climbing and climbing.

TOTAL: $744.79 (includes flights from Ireland to London and London to Iceland)

AVERAGE: $93.10/day

ICELAND

My sister and I were in Iceland for a week, and we went all out. We toured around the Golden Circle and the Southern coast, went SCUBA diving in between tectonic plates, ate the best hot dogs in the world, and chilled out in the infamous Blue Lagoon. Iceland is a seriously expensive country, and my travel budget took its biggest hit yet, but we knew this going in. And while diving between North America and Europe may have set me back $350, I would do it again in a heartbeat.

TOTAL - $1293.65

AVERAGE - $184.81/day

So what’s the total damage for the month of April (plus the first 4 days of May)?

TOTAL (34 DAYS) - $3684.36

AVERAGE (34 DAYS) - $108.36/day

So there you have it! One hell of an expensive month of travel. But the things I got to do? Amazing. And I promise I’ll get posts up about these crazy adventures soon!

But my new adventure? Having a job again for the summer! I have a feeling that as fun as the job seems like it’s going to be, transitioning back into working is going to be tough.

Good thing it’s only for the summer!

Have you ever said ‘to hell with it’ to your budget for the sake of doing something amazing?
